about

This was originally written as an instrumental as part of the soundtrack for the feature film "In No Particular Order" by directors Kristine Cofsky and Terry Miles. I later wrote words to it about the general feeling of guilt that seems to come with everyday life; the guilt of consumption and waste we add to the planet just by existing. The obligation of wanting that burden to not be in vain. If we're going to be here, using resources, we might as well get busy doing something productive. But what and how?

I had an earlier version of this song ready to release back in 2018 but that song along with many others were lost on a failed hard disk. I paid $3,000 to have the data recovered by a professional lab. Bits and pieces of my recordings came back, thankfully Booth White's drum performance was salvaged. The recording you hear here, however, was mostly laid down in the few months prior to its release.

lyrics

No one wants to be alone
No one gives their life away, yeah
To get a job and build a home
With another debt to pay
Somewhere kids will complicate
Until you have the math to prove
Many things around you let the world outside make a bullied child
When guilt motivates you

People of the world
Step out of the sunlight
Find a hole in the ground
Start crawling around
Whose little world is it?
When you're crawling around a hole in the ground

Take a while, ignore your phone
Not everything deserves your brain, yeah
Get comfortable with being alone
Let the rest get swept away
Push into another lane
And when you have enough to lose
Someone will remind you
That the world outside makes a bullied child
When guilt motivates you

I'm hoping someday that everyone works it out
Get carried away and that's what brings you down, down, down

People of the world
People of the world
Find a home in your heart
Find a home in your heart
For whose little world this is
When you're the enemy
